Sergio Nicolau, a 5th-generation viticulturist, leads the family’s latest venture, Familia Nicolau. Building on a rich tradition of winemaking, the Nicolau family established their Organic Certified vineyards in 2018, dedicated to producing high-quality wines. The vineyards are cultivated using Regenerative Agriculture principles, promoting soil and plant health, resulting in wines that are well-balanced and truly expressive of their Terroir. Located near the Atlantic Coast, their vineyards benefit from calcareous clay soils, giving the wines a distinctive freshness, acidity, and minerality.

Familia Nicolau began a new chapter in 2018 with Organic Certified vineyards rooted in Regenerative Agriculture. Located near the Atlantic coast in the S. Mamede da Ventosa hills, close to Torres Vedras, the vineyard’s calcareous clay soils yield wines with distinct freshness, acidity, and minerality, reflecting their unique terroir.

Sérgio Nicolau, a 5th-generation viticulturist and agroecologist, leads Família Nicolau Wines, a family project rooted in a rich tradition of winemaking. Established as Organic Certified in 2018, the winery employs Regenerative Agriculture practices, including animal integration, composting, cover crops, and precision plant nutrition, to restore soil health and biodiversity. Sérgio also shares his expertise as a consultant and educator, supporting farmers transitioning to regenerative practices while remaining deeply involved in his local agricultural community.

João Nicolau, the father of Sérgio Nicolau, played a pivotal role in shaping Família Nicolau Wines. His decision to retire and entrust the next generation with the management of the vineyards marked a turning point, allowing the family to embrace regenerative farming practices and carry forward their legacy of sustainable winemaking.

Joana Afonso Nicolau, co-founder of Família Nicolau Wines, has been instrumental in transitioning the family’s vineyards to regenerative organic farming. With a deep commitment to sustainability, she helped restructure the vineyards to focus on indigenous grape varieties, fostering biodiversity and producing premium wines. Joana’s vision also aims to inspire local farmers to adopt eco-friendly practices and build a resilient agricultural community.
